British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts leading to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to stamp out any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

British military aircraft have carried out surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this strike for their expertise and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of numerous British personnel on duty over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the American forces conducted what it described as a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says Islamic State still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
